Historic Site Designation — La Trinidad UMC (San Antonio)

Conference is asked to designate La Trinidad United Methodist Church of San Antonio as an official United Methodist Historic Site under ¶1712 of the Book of Discipline. The designation recognizes the church's significant historical impact on the development of Hispanic/Latino Methodism, its leadership in the conference and general church, and its longstanding ministry in San Antonio.

Commission on Archives and History

Book of Discipline ¶1712

The Rio Texas Conference Commission on Archives and History has reviewed and approved the request of La Trinidad United Methodist Church for designation as a United Methodist Historic Site in accordance with ¶1712 of the Book of Discipline.

La Trinidad UMC has demonstrated significant historical impact in the development of Hispanic/Latino Methodism, leadership in the annual conference and general church, and longstanding ministry in the San Antonio community.

Recommendation

The Rio Texas Annual Conference designates La Trinidad United Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas, as an official United Methodist Historic Site in accordance with ¶1712 of the Book of Discipline.

Report of the Commission

The Commission on Archives and History met on November 5, 2025, February 17, 2026, and March 18, 2026, to organize its work and begin addressing key archival priorities for the Rio Texas Conference.

Organization and Leadership — At its initial meeting, the Commission elected leadership: Chair, Bobbi Kroll; Vice-Chair, Ralph Thompson; Secretary, Daniel Flores.

Archival Priorities and Work:

  1. Preservation and Mold Remediation — The Commission reviewed the condition of conference archival holdings, including inactive mold. Affected materials require cleaning for long-term preservation and remain isolated while remediation strategies are explored.
  2. Relocation of Archives — Plans are underway to relocate the archives to Travis Park United Methodist Church, with consideration of climate-control requirements. The Commission authorized exploration of temporary climate-controlled storage until permanent space is prepared.
  3. Digitization Efforts — The Commission discussed potential partnerships with archival institutions, authorized exploration of grant opportunities, and will seek guidance from the General Commission on Archives and History.
  4. Documentation and Representation — The Commission affirmed documenting contemporary church life, expanding representation of African American congregations and historically underrepresented communities, and preserving records related to social engagement and current conference transitions.
  5. Historical Site Review – La Trinidad UMC — At its March 18, 2026 meeting, the Commission received a presentation regarding La Trinidad UMC and, after review and supplemental documentation, voted unanimously to recommend designation as a United Methodist Historic Site.
